Braces in Westmead
Traditional Braces and Orthodontics
Our Westmead family dentists have extensive training in orthodontic therapy, which means you can have traditional braces without a referral to a specialist.

What are Traditional Braces?
Conventional braces use a set of orthodontic brackets and archwires to move your teeth. They are extremely helpful for correcting severely crowded teeth, especially in young patients. Since a child’s mouth and bones are still growing, we can use braces and early intervention techniques to expand their jaw growth. In time, this allows for a wider bite and better spacing as teeth start to erupt.
Early Orthodontic Intervention in Children
Teens and adults can benefit from traditional braces, too, particularly if they have moderate to severe crowding.
What Happens After My Treatment is Complete?
All of our orthodontic patients will move to a retention phase once their teeth are aligned.
Retainers can be removable or bonded in place and help prevent teeth from drifting out of alignment. If your retainers are removable, be sure to wear them as directed to prevent relapse.
Caring for Your Orthodontic Appliances
It’s extremely important to clean your braces thoroughly each day. Since plaque or food debris can accumulate around your brackets, we recommend taking your time and carefully cleaning around each one at least twice a day with an interdental brush. This extra attention will reduce your risk of cavities or white demineralised spots on your teeth.
Does Insurance Cover Braces?
If you have orthodontic coverage under your health fund, the braces are covered.
Our patient coordinators can lodge on-the-spot claims for you or your child’s braces and assist you with a quote for the treatment.
